House of Sugar and Sickness

I’m at home today with a sick Andy. He came down with a fever on Sunday and tested positive for strep yesterday (Monday). Pretty sure he got it from Natalie, who was vomicking on Thursday and stayed home from school FRIDAY. I can’t shake the thought that I’m sick, too. Every sniffle, “Is that it?” Every tickle in my throat, “I have strep.” Maybe all moms do this. Maybe just hypochondriac moms. Maybe, though, I’m getting a TON of work done here with no distractions (once I figured out how to turn on the XBOX.)

I’m still doing okay on the Wheat Belly diet but, as I sit here and eat this Strawberry Watermelon Tootsie Roll POP (which is gross, by the way, but I continue to eat it), I realize that I will never be sugar-free. Sure wish I could be. Giving up wheat is relatively easy. It’s sugar and potatoes that hinder me. They define who I am. They are a part of me. I can never divorce them. Not even a legal separation. We’re common-law.

Cooking with all my wheat-free alternatives (coconut flour, almond flour, ground flax seed) has been interesting for sure. But what I’ve found is – most of my recipes contain no sugar. See? Sugar is a necessary part of life. When I add that back in, I’m confident they’ll taste better.

Good news is, I’ve kept off the weight I lost. That was my goal – that, and, to feel better. Check. Check.

But, it’s November. Good food is upon us. Good food full of wheat. And sugar and starches and snacks and, oh my! I’ll eat it. But likely not in the obscene amounts that I used to.

Also it’s November and we’re having spring-like tornado weather lately. It usually only happens when Todd is out of town, but last night we had some scary storms blow through around 3 am. Just when my fears about snakes get a reprieve for the cooler temps…the tornadoes roll in.

We had some family photos taken on Saturday – a quick, 15-minute mini-session with a neighborhood photographer. I’m excited to see them for a few reasons: 1) we haven’t taken family photos since Andy was one, 2) it will be interesting to see if the photographer got any decent shots of Andy, who only likes to goof off in front of a camera, and 3) when I got in the car to leave I noticed I had lip gloss all over my teeth. This is why I never wear lip gloss. Never never never never never.

More good news, Todd starts a new job after Thanksgiving that will keep him off the road and closer to home.

The End.
